I woke Stephen, babbling incoherently about losing the house and a€œwhat did I do?a€ . . . what did I do. I tried to be so careful, but Ia€™m so stupid. What did I do?a€ qYoua€™re getting all upset about nothing, q Steve said. qMaybe you should start taking youa€™re pills again for a while.q qWhy? Ia€™m not getting sick. And what if hea€™s not there? Do I go away and just show up again? How many times should I do this?q qOh, come on. I dona€™t know. Just do it.q qOkay. Okay. I know youa€™re afraid and Ia€™ll try to do everything that I can to make you feel more comfortable about this, but can I please get some sleep now? I have to go to work in the morning.q qOkay. But youa€™ll go get the papers, right? ... Well, you had to pee, anyway. ... What?... What are you laughing at.q qYoua€™re funny.q qIa€™m not funny. He was in the kitchen making his lunch. I was remembering Saraa€™s very good advice: a€œOnce Ia€™ve chosen a stone, I never let it out of my hands, a€ she had said. This sent another shiver down my back. a€œI know how he did it, a€ I said. Steve looked at me sternly. a€œDid what?a€ he said. He obviously didna€™t want to have this conversation.
