The main issue in hydrocarbon reservoirs is the recovery of oil from underground. If a hole (.e., a well) is punched and nothing else is done one may produce only 20% of the oil. The Hole may fail and collapse. Thermodynamics provides a theoretical framework for efficient hydrocarbon exploration. It also helps to keep a well wide open. Crude oil consists of million of components and a change in pressure or temperature may cause the formation of solids, which can plug the medium. Again thermodynamics can tell you what to do. We can use thermodynamics models to increase oil recovery in hydrocarbon reservoir from 20% to 50% percent. Thermodynamic models can also be used for the design of processing plants in chemical industries and gas processing industries. The main goal of the book is to provide an in-depth- thermodynamic framework for solving certain petroleum and chemical engineering problems.
